Our Battle (Just some thoughts on what is changing and why)

I connected some random thoughts and I would love to know your opinion.

We think we are very modern and enlightened. And this might be true to a certain extend, but in many ways we are stuck in the eighteen hundreds. We are only now leaving the industrial revolution behind us. And in this period we designed the organizational systems we are now struggling with. All large companies and organizations where based on exploitation of people and/or resources... and they still…

Hello Arne, Craftbeer is the title artisinal beer producers give to differentiate their product for mass produced beers.  :-) Our craftbeer workshop is exploring the insights we found in research between; customers, craft, everyday luxury items and taste. Certainly here in the UK and the USA its a fast growing market of which only a few companies have designed customer and non-customer engagements and feedback to compete.

Yes, we drink some beer :-), .....and Sorry I thought I was sending the message to my twitter followers!

Thanks Arne.. What would your approach be towards this process of evaluating ROI ?

Thanks Arne ! What I mean by design here are the product designs, development and process.

I know design is used to differentiate and entice users but at the same would one be able to justify as to whether increased investment in design would generate increased profits ? Also, it's incredibly difficult to untangle design's contribution from all the business drivers.

Per say if I would like to interject an feature to a product design and the company's head asks me what would be the estimated ROI , I would have to fall back . It would be a challenge  to see if one can "Prove the value of design by demonstrating the ROI' as we are in an economy where every cent is made to count.  I hope this would be an interesting thesis topic for my masters and am planning to do the focus case studies wit 3M hopefully !!! Let me know your thoughts on this Arne .

Yes, I have finally finshed a Finnish book on service design and this is now in print :)

I have an idea about a book on social design with both more theoretical articles and hands on cases. Here is with few words what I have in mind:

Social Innovation with Design Tools
A new book on how design can improve everyday living, social cohesion and innovation. There is need to revisit and broaden the concept of social design. How can service design, interaction design and user centered design increase the innovation potential in the public and the third sector? What kind of practical means can different design methods offer for social change?

Hello Arne!

I'm mechanical engineer in production and management and my master's thesis is on service design for the emergency rooms of a hospital (if you have ever been in a Greek hospital, this maybe will sound like an anecdote...). I don't have any other relative professional experience so far.

These days I work on a paper trying to connect my knowledge in the field of human resources management and the practice of service design. I'm looking for bibliographic sources about how service designers can involve the employees of the front and back office in a service design project. I have in mind methods that use the service practitioners (i.e. brainstorming, interviews) and I'm trying to learn more about this topic. Thank u very much for your response!

Alexandra._

p.s.It feels nice to be here :-)

Hello Arne! I was at your workshop last fall at Kuopio. It was really inspiring. I'm starting on my pro gradu work now and it involves using service design methods, partly thaks to that seminar and workshop in Kuopio.
