I have looked over the etherpad notes, but couldnt quite see the connection to design thinking. we have been working with the crowd so far to gain insight to people's thoughts and behaviour in respect to certain topics. if you search for "bag" and "contents" on flickr, for instance, you will see a variety of people displaying their belongings. it gives you an idea about the use of a certain product. thats the kind of utilization of social media we want to look at in this group

may be not so directly related but definitively changing the rules of social is Twitter and handling it and apply it to prototyping is a challenge but as well a strength.
i recently fall on:

It is about using Twitter as a back channel of communication as a or your presentation is running.
a useful tip indeed

Very interesting topic you address. Personally, I am very interested in exploring the area of co-creation. Users are the best experts, so how can we involve them throughout our design process? Since they are not designers themselves, I think we should support them with some tools. For this I am inspired by the different layers of experience;

Current media are great for straightforward input, what people actually can verbalize and say. I think we might need new formats/games/apps for social media to enable people to help them share deeper insights for developing better products/services.

@Kate. Very interesting stuff you are doing! I am especially interested in the 'start conversations' aspect of your initiative. I wonder what tools you employ to keep this conversation agile throughout the design process.

Concept Feedback provides free feedback for marketers and designers. Aside from that, I think using trend analysis - what's hot on twitter, facebook posts, youtube links, flickr shots can help in design thinking. For prototyping, you can set up a FB page and solicit comments/suggestions. twtpoll can be used through twitter to survey crowds on particular designs or options.

I have been part of a new initiative for a few months now called Studio Unbound and it is all about using social media tools to boast your profile, build networks and start conversations.

Recently we brought this initiative to the Jewellery students of Dundee, showing them the importance of marketing yourself and sharing your story online.

I am currently thinking about how to marry the digital storytelling with the physical storytelling. How do you translate the digital social media into the gallery or retail space that jewellers frequently exhibit?

just to clarify this group: i had a few discussions with colleagues on this and we have been thinking about utilizing social media. by that i mean twitter, flickr, facebook etc - gathering observations via flickr or conducting little tests, interviews etc via facebook. thats the kind of use which is the topic of this group.
