Arie Goldshlager just send me these great ideas:

1a) Select several members of the 2009 Customer Service Hall of Shame

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/SmartSpending/ConsumerActionGu...

1b) [Alternatively] Ask prospective Conference Sponsors to share “Live” Service Design Problems.

2) Initiate Service Design Workshops [pre- and during the conference] to design Initial Service Design Concepts for the above 1a) and 1b) problems.

3) [Alternatively] Employ [in real time] Crowdsourcing as one element.

4) Select best concept by competition.

I'd love to have a festival of flavors.. :)

And I would love "you design thinkers" asking "us external experts" the tough questions.. New insights requires thinking without boxes. To get there we need to be forced out of our comfort zone. Not by telling other audiences what we know and hide behind our expertise, but by being asked the questions one cannot prepare for.. and see what comes out of the conversations..

In return I can probably think of a few for the service design network too ;)

It's a really great idea Arne.. I'll start rambling some of my friends ..

I would like to propose another idea: a "Festival of Flavors".

And -much like a music festival- focus on having conversations between experts from all different backgrounds? Just to prevent having another conference of 'usual suspects' agreeing all the time.

I would love to hear from visionary people from Marketers, Fashion (like Diesel), Social CRM, Economists, Information Architects, UX etc etc. These are the people we encounter in our professional lives, they communities are living the same paradigm shift. We should be the the people to ENGAGE, bridge the gap...

... have a "Festival Of Flavors"

What do you think?

I like the name for the "Engage" for the Service Design Conference in Berlin this year in October. Hopefully, I'll be able to assist.
Currently, I am designing a Service to inform/engage people in Dundee about the new Transition Town initiative in West Dundee. Very soon I'll post my blog with the process of the project.

Hi All,

please allow for a short comment on the very valuable perspective Fergus shared with us:

I agree that GET UP is a bit too broad, but maybe it's worth to play a bit more with the multiple options ... maybe not what we might used to hear/see at 'serious' conferences, but why not? While the comparison does not 100% match, but I recall the 2nd conference on Design Management we've hosted at KISD many years back where we cooked our dinner in a collaborative effort with some 50+ people on site. The link with Design Management??? Well, I think most people didn't see it either, but the exercise has been fun ... and lasting!

Therefore I imagined the 'failure' metaphor, fully acknowledging that the connotations as such might be a bit biased. Still from my view such a tagline is exactly aiming/addressing those people who are not familiar with the huuh, so cool domain of service design ;) According to my belief neither a product nor service is ultimately infinite in its validity and it goes through possibly 'iterations' over its life cycle.

The crux from my view is that very often we tend to 'sell' our solutions as 'right' not allowing them to 'fail' at a certain point. But as explained earlier this is exactly the point where something new needs to emerge ... and this is where 'Design' can play it's strength! Maybe thinking from that perspective helps to develop a theme/tagline/agenda to leverage from?

Last but not least I don't have any personal agenda with that particular topic/theme/conference as I won't attend, but I love and appreciate the conversation! :)

Just a thought:

ENGAGE

encouraging us to..
engage with other participants
engage with the themes of the conference
engage with the customers in the design process

Sorry to be a party pooper here, but I was asked to let you know what I think and GET UP! isn't necessarily doing anything for me...

Is the theme of this year's conference all about recovering from failure? If so I guess the title is a very positive embodiment of that, although personally I'm not keen on the inference that I have to 'GET UP' or indeed that I have to do anything... ;-) The psychology says that it's an instructive title that is cramping my sense of personal autonomy, or maybe its still early and I havent had any coffee yet... :-)

- What are the themes of this years conference? I'm sure I should have been able to find them somewhere else...please point me in the right direction...that might help me put my gray matter to work on what I feel would be a more representative title...

Simply, I think the title needs to be less esoteric and more descriptive of what Service Design actually is or what new directions and collaborations will most likely emerge from attendance at the conference? It's a challenge but in the Inclusive Design spirit I would be approaching this from the perspective of what message would we want someone who has never experienced Service Design before this conference to leave the conference with?

The rest of us have already bought in and will most likely be there anyway...this title is for those that aren't sure about Service Design already and for the legacy and reputation of the conference in years to come...?

Another way of thinking would be, what feeling describes how you yourself felt when you last left a really good conference, or for that matter party with your friends or successful meeting with clients - surely those are all experiences that we should be working to ensure that SDC10 resonates with... Inspiration, is cliched by is also a reasonable expectation and ambition of any conference, Community - also what it's about... Learning - again tricky to present in a non-patronising way, but still a valid sentiment... Fun, Social...

Why did we choose Berlin? The physical environment will obviously have a significant impact on how the experience resonates with us - are there any Berlin-isms or local expressions and values that might translate to embody some of what we will feel in this experience?

Hope that helps! will keep thinking myself...time for a caffeine injection!!...Maybe I do need to GET UP!! :-)

Following on from Arne's comment and quote from Jonathan Baldwin.....on the Dare to Fail theme we could have ....."Dare to Dance" for the disco, "Dare to Drink" for the bar, "Dare to drive" for the bus, "Dare to dive-in" for the workshops (or the swimming pool!).

Tough call. I would go for "Dare to fail", since it is more provokative. Although you are right that "Get Up!" makes sense in various ways, still it might be a bit interchangeable. Furthermore, I think that Dare to fail is a request to actively participate even for not that experienced people - especially when we think of different (rather co-creative) formats!

(Sorry, I don't have any intellectual quote on hand..) ;)
