The CDC and IDEO have had some interesting projects in the public sector, like The Carrot Project http://bit.ly/4BURYl

Hope that's relevant to just "jumping in" to the discussion.

Hello all. Just dipping into this discussion for the first time.

Designing in the public sector is problematic (at least from my experience in Australia) as budget constraints mean a tendency toward an old-fashioned view of what design can offer. That is, that the designer is brought into the process after all of the thinking has been done.

The 'Designer as decorator' is a very entrenched way of thinking in Australia. I am happy to say it is less so in my new UK home.

I have been promising Arne an article for a very long time, but have held off as so to write with a deeper knowledge and understanding.

I'm working with Skills Development Scotland to help integrate design thinking into their organisation and new processes to help design better services.

I'm summing up my work so hard in a document called, 'Why it is hard to change the public sector'...and it's coming (I promise Arne)

but just to keep this group flowing...here's a link to some visuals of the work I've been doing so far...

Would be interesting to gain some thoughts on why it is difficult to design in the public sector from Wenovski members...I'm all ears!

just reading about Design Councils, 'Towards Better Public Services by Design' strategy.

http://www.designcouncil.org.uk/en/Design-Council/1/What-we-do/Our-activities/Public-services-by-design/

"Over the next two years the Design Council are developing a programme using good design to improve public services"

anyone shed some light on what is involved in this?
