I like the idea of a case study. A couple of clarifications and possible suggestions. I like the concentration on the person, but as a semantics issue is "user" the right word. Perhaps "beneficiary", although I'm not sure that's right either. Seems if we reframe the words, we might better reframe the solutions. Also, are we looking at tools that may exist already or be in development, new tools, new methods to move to behavior changes (behavioral economics, gaming, fun theory)?

I'd also be interested in others methodology (formal or informal) for really thinking "out of the box" about these issues. Always up for something that sparks my creativity.

Thanks for all the great work on this subject. I look forward to it.

Sam,
We have a great group of members. I would like to give the Team a case study. I believe Design Thinking starts with understanding the needs of the user.
This is what I call a case study of the ultimate user.
Asian female, age 57, mother of 2, house wife, extremely healthy during younger days now suffering from Rheumatoid Arthiritis, Glaucoma, Thyroid, loss of sensation in fingers, partially blinded in one eye.
Well educated, well read and a very happy person not prone to complaining.
Doctor prescribed medication includes Timoptic eye drops, Alphagan eye drops, Zalatan, Diamox, Humera, Boniva, Calcium, Vitamin D, Folic Acid, Levothyroxine.
The patient generally goes for blood work, x-rays, MRI's.
She has a primary care physician, Rheumatologist, Opthamologist and at times referred to an eye surgeon.
I would ideally like to look at tools which can be used to map her experience.
Next tools to review the performance of her care givers.
Next interaction between her care givers.
Next methods for predictive technologies.
Next methods to make the life of this person more comfortable as she cannot even open the eye drop bottles prescribed for her.
I feel that a primary purpose of our group is to take care of this ultimate user and others like her.

I'm working on a project called Lifescape that looks at how design of environments and experiences can make us happier and healthier from work, to home to community...I look forward to learning.

Hi Sam,
Great idea. I am very interested in the use of design-thinking and technology in the healthcare context. I am very new in service design but willing to learn, so I'll closely follow the discussion.

I'm starting a project about healthcare addressing nutrition, I think our eating habits are becoming a real problem.

Looking forward to hearing about your projects, concerns, ideas...

Daniel,
My immediate goal is to chart the terrain of healthcare design thinking. My very humble start is on Healthcare Innovation by Design. I would like to learn from Wenovski members about areas of which I am unaware. I mostly see myself as a catalyst though and I think group members should set the agenda.
Best,
Sam

Sam,
Great start. Could you give us a road map for a suggested journey on definitions and research areas for members to explore. This is for starters.
