one image says it all..or not?
It is an old Chinese saying: one image says more than a thousand words. In my PhD research I came across the need for visualizations for organizations. Nevertheless, what a 'right' visualization is, is far from simple, In my research I discovered that the type of process a team / organization is in shapes the required kind of visualization. Persuasive visuals are needed to seduce stakeholders to invest, sketchy back of a napkin visuals are needed to incite dialogue.
I'm looking for more examples, outside the organization I studied, of great visualizations. Not because they are aesthetic, showing great design, or like art. But because tehy were effective inside organizations or for clients to get 'things going'. What was the first sketch of the iPhone / TomTom GO / Senseo / LinkedIn / .... that 'got the dream'?

that's so interesting, i read a book about that kind of illustration, "the back of the napkin" by dan roam... it's very inspiring.. i guess the first sketch of an iphone was just a rectangle with scribbles inside it, and probably something that looked totally different right?

Personally I do not believe that the first sketch would resemble so much the existing iphone. I heard that for teh ipad it too more than 10 years before Steve was content. In between many things must have changed. Still, somewhere in the process some crucial ideas arose, like the 'one home button'. I'm looking for those pivotal sketches and it does not need to be an Apple product.

- Deming used to say the power in a single picture of the organisation is that it can show where people inside the organisation can see where they fit and how they contribute to the whole.
- Graphs that make a point can have a similar effect
